In accordance with its Program, adopted for the years 2008/09, WIPO's strategic goals are promoting a balanced IP System and realizing its development potential, strengthening IP infrastructure, institutions and human resources, the progressive development of international IP law, delivery of quality service in global IP protection systems and greater efficiency of management and administrative support processes.

The WIPO Secretariat coordinates meetings and assists in the implementation of decisions and one of its key functions is to administer the international IP registration systems. WIPO's Director General is Dr. Francis Gurry from Australia. He took office on 1 October 2008.

The highest decision-making body of WIPO is the General Assembly. In addition, many agreements administered by WIPO have their own annual decision-making meetings. Furthermore, several Standing Committees and Working Groups have been set up within WIPO, which cover and discuss the wide range of issues related
to intellectual property.
